Nothing comes free.
This new class of diet drugs have generated adverse reports of ischemic optic neuropathy. Exercise and eating healthier foods is my recommendation for your longer term health. Read my summary for more information.
A paper recently published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology (link opens in new window, see Lakhani et al, March 10, 2026) reports that ischemic optic neuropathy (ION), a rare but vision-threatening complication, is now linked to GLP-1 receptor agonists, particularly semaglutide. You know these drugs in the US, Canada and the world as Wegovy and Ozempic.
The study for this paper used over 30-million reports from the US FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (2017–2024), and found that both Wegovy and Ozempic have increased odds ratios for ION. Wegovy being somewhat worst, but Ozempic still increasing your risk of optic neuropathy too.
Fundamentally, ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) damages the optic nerve and neurons in your retinas that connect to the visual pathways in your brain. So, as a biochemist and vision scientist, my advice is exercise and eating healthier foods for your longer term health, and avoiding increased risk for optic nerve damage.
Once you loose optic nerve neurons, called ganglion cells, they do not grow back.
